Jason Barron grew up mushing dogs in Alaska.He and his brothers Laird and Will spent countless hours doing chores in the family dog lot, and devoted their teen years to helping their father, John Barron, train his Iditarod team, as well as pursuing their own Jr. Iditarod ambitions. In 1993, at the age of twenty-one, Jason ran his first Iditarod, claiming Rookie of the Year and cementing his future as a pro dog musher. While handling for his father and younger brother Will at the 1995 Knik 200, Jason happened to meet a lovely young woman named Harmony Kanavle who was running her first professional race. They fell in love, and shortly thereafter, ran the Iditarod together, finishing with a snowy wedding under the burled arch in Nome. In the spring of 2000, Jason and Harmony moved to the Rocky Mountains of Montana and started their own kennel, KanaBear Enterprises. During the past decade, they have won numerous middle distance races including back to back wins in both Montana's Race to the Sky, and Minnesota's John Beargrease Marathon. Jason has also been in the top 15 of the Iditarod three times claiming most improved musher with his 12th place finish in '04, and breaking the 9 day barrier with his 8th place finish in '06. The Barrons reached outside the box when choosing the name KanaBear Enterprises for their kennel. The joining of their last names represents the team work involved in running their business, and the Enterprises serves as an umbrella for all of the opportunities their kennel offers.These include fall and spring dog mushing classesthat range from mushing101 to fine tuning your race effort; dog lot tours & rides; quality dogs for sale from top bloodlines; educational presentations; watercolor pet portraits, and much more. Ballad of the Northland is a story about a young boy
who grows up poverty stricken in the bush country of South Central Alaska. On the
Yentna River, very near the town of Skwentna, he and his cousins grow up poor,
hungry, hard, and tougher then nails. He learns to hunt, trap, and just get by,
in a world where survival is accomplished day by day and never ever taken
for granted. One day, he learns of Alaska’s Last Great Race, a 1000 mile
dog sled race from Anchorage to Nome, and his odyssey begins…
